Mang Yayat Guerrilla Literacy

Rudiat (38) or familiarly called mang yayat is a tofu man who daily travels from Cimaung District, Bandung Regency to Pangalengan District, Bandung Regency. He delivers tofu every day to villages to fulfill the wishes of buyers. Mang Yayat always carries a book box in the middle containing dozens of books, which are always in the future by residents who want to buy tofu and borrow books. Among them, residents always want to borrow children’s dongen books, recipes, and how to grow crops or raise livestock.

Mang Yayat, who dropped out of school in the 4th grade of elementary school, bought fine art books, on Jalan Dewi Sartika, because he wanted to know about the world of painting, and his wife Ratna Suminar (35) who liked books. That is the beginning of Mang Yayat and Teh Ratna began to love the world of literacy. Then Mang Yayat and Teh Ratna bought some books and became a mini library at his house, Jalan Gunung Puntang, Kampung Pasirhuni, Pasirhuni Village, Cimaung District.

In 2010 Mang Yayat became active as a tofu seller while traveling around with his books. Initially, there were some who thought that Mang Yayat was carrying books of cults, when he started pioneering these social activities. Running with the time mang yayat who used to pioneer as an employee of the confectionery, can be accepted by the community. Currently, after the mobile library, he also opened an art studio and reading workshop, inaugurated in 2013, under the name TBM Sehati, now has thousands of books. There is the proudest thing for Mang Yayat, which is when the residents, expressed their success after reading a book on how to raise livestock.

Not only that, kang yayat also gave lessons in recitation, painting, and bamboo music. Everything is free of charge. Mang Yayat also has a literacy agency, which is a stall, with a mini library, in his hut. Now Mang Yayat already has the literacy agent as many as 2 stalls have partners.
