Wayang Cepak

Wayang Cepak is synonymous as a traditional art of Cirebon Regency and City. This puppet art has the peculiarity of ornate ornaments on its head that is flat (parallel to the top of its head).

According to Abah Atik Rasta Prawira, his parents, namely Otong Rasta, were the ones who discovered this puppet. While the existence of wayang cepak in the city of Bandung is the service of Mama Usup Sarbin around the 1800s who was invited by Kanjeng Dalem Bandung. After the performance, Mama Usup received a positive response from the residents of Kanjeng Dalem so that Mama Usup was given the title Ngabei.

After Mama Rasta died, the art of puppetry was continued by her son, Otong Rasta. From 1949 to the 1970s, the name of Ki Dalang Mama Otong Rasta was quite well known.

After the Otong Rasta period, it was Atik Rasta Prawira’s turn to continue the Bandung wayang cepak. Together with the Galura Art Studio that she has in Cicendo, Bandung City, Mama Atik preserves this art.

“I used to pay attention to Mr. (Otong) constantly masterminding until I finally became the mastermind. In fact, I even taught some students in America in 2004 and England in 1933,” said Abah Atik.

However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the performance of wayang cepak stopped. There is no scheduled gig. “I mah pesen to all students, the right school. If you love cultural heritage, let’s research often. Take care of our culture,” said Abah Atik.
